The Brewers are primarily responsible for making beer. They are involved with the entire process of beer making from grain to glass. Their chief duties include following recipes and guidelines in order to brew, ferment, transfer and dispense the beer. Brewers also need to keep a check on the quality of beer both before and after filtration. In addition, they may be required to operate a milling machine, clean and sterilize the brew tanks, filtering equipment, and carbonating, as well as perform regular repairs on the machinery.

The brewer must be an experienced professional who uses advanced knowledge of science to analyze, interpret and make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Qualities that make a good brewer include attention to detail, precisely following processes, creativity and innovation.

Work Environment

Work is done in a small craft brewery, brew house, brew pub, handling different kinds of equipment like hoses, brewing vessels, pressurized gasses, packaging machinery, and computers. The work environment can be cold, wet, hot, and noisy. Certain Personal Protective Equipment is required/recommended.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Physically demanding for most of the workday.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Job Classification-Exempt. This is a full time position. Days and hours of work will vary, but will include nights, weekends and holidays. The average work will be 40+ hours per week.


Brewers are expected to travel for outside sales, promotions, and festivals.

Required Education and Experience

Beer making experience is required

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Degree in organic chemistry, food science and biotechnology, chemical or process engineering, or microbiology is preferred.
  • Some sales experience.
