HEAD BREWER JOB DESCRIPTION

for

DRIFA BREWING

of the

MARQUETTE BREWING COOPERATIVE

The Head Brewer will be responsible for all aspects of beer production, with an emphasis on quality, creativity and variety.  The Head Brewer reports to the General Manager.  The Head Brewer will collaborate with the General Manager to plan the brewing schedule.

FUNCTIONS

  • Production, fermentation, kegging, aging & storage
  • Scheduling and inventory control
  • Budget and resource management
  • Training and management of brew staff
  • Recipe formulation and collaboration with other brewers as appropriate
  • Routine cleaning and maintenance of brewery and equipment
  • Clean and sanitary working environment in accordance with Health Department standards
  • Yeast management and overall quality control
  • Accurate and timely record keeping related to the brewing process
  • Positively interact with staff, customers, vendors
  • Actively promote and educate members and customers about all aspects of beer and brewing
  • Think critically, troubleshoot and work unsupervised
  • Bartend as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Must have knowledge of practices, methods, tools and equipment used in brewing production
  • Must have the ability to provide and follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to promote the brewery to the public and at events
  • Must be able to troubleshoot technical aspects of the brewing process
  • Must be punctual, responsible, self-motivated, positive and an excellent communicator
  • Must have good computer skills necessary for record keeping and the point-of-sale system
  • Must have a strong work ethic and desire to succeed in producing beer that is of high creativity, quality and variety
  • Must be able to multi-task and manage time efficiently
  • Must have mechanical aptitude as appropriate to the job of Head Brewer
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems preferred
  • Must be efficient and detail oriented
  • Must have a focus on innovation and continual improvement while maintaining a high quality of standards throughout the brewing process

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional brewing experience required
  • Brewing education preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a full-time position.  Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to routinely walk, sit, reach, lift, bend, twist, kneel and carry objects weighing up to 55 pounds and be able to handle kegs as appropriate within applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a loud, wet environment
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time (4 or more consecutive hours)
  • Must be able to use latches, hand tools, clamps, hoses, etc., requiring manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Must be able to work safely with hot and hazardous chemicals

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Negotiable and commensurate with experience.  Potential bonuses based on barrel sales.
