THE BIG PICTURE
The Party Wizard is responsible for delivering the ultimate Modern Times experience while enhancing cultural awareness of Modern Times brands and heritage in his/her assigned territory. The Party Wizard reports to the Area Sales Manager. This role is responsible for schmoozing hard and being a go-to person for Modern Times fans regarding all things Modern Times: history, beers, and upcoming radness at beer festivals, tastings and other events as needed. As one of the important and often first faces our fans will interact with, it is the Party Wizards’ responsibility to represent Modern Times in the most informative way possible while providing an outstanding service experience for every person. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation. This position will be one in which hours are determined on an as needed basis and will vary regularly.

THE EVERYDAY VIEW

  • Be an expert in all things Danksauce Whales including but not limited to Modern Times history and heritage, history of brewing and brewing process, the coffee and craft beer industry, beer and coffee styles and ingredients, and have basic sales knowledge
  • Interface with consumers and accounts as a representative of the brand
  • Conduct Adult Beverage (alcohol) demonstrations
  • Generate deep brand awareness and positive product passion for Modern Times brands
  • Share passion for all things craft coffee and beer, as well as the ability to taste, describe and evaluate qualities and characteristics
  • Assess customer’s individual usage needs and interests in order to best recommend products
  • Continually learn and retain detailed, precise, often scientific, information which you must present in an interesting, fun and engaging manner to groups of all sizes and levels of craft coffee and beer knowledge
  • Provide timely, accurate post-event reporting and communicate ideas for improved program development, as well as live updates when needed
  • Provide weekly summaries of activity in the field
  • Set-up, attend, and break down all festival materials for outside events
  • Clean, and perform occasional maintenance on Jockey Boxes
  • Interact in a friendly, enthusiastic, energetic and outgoing manner with management, clients, and consumers in any setting
  • Visit specific accounts as assigned
  • Enforce all applicable alcohol laws and rules
  • Be capable of spotting future opportunities for Modern Times through consumer dialogue and event activation
  • Be a team player and able to interact with all levels of the organization
  • Act as a brand ambassador at all times
  • Other tasks as needed

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check, including DMV history
  • Minimum 1 year related work experience required
  • LEAD certification is required
  • Valid ServSafe, or applicable State or County Food Handler certificate required
  • Must live in assigned territory
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required
  • Working personal vehicle required
  • Preferred Cicerone beer certification
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Modern Times Beer
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Preferred retail/customer service industry experience
  • Preferred Bar/service industry experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company
  • Able to work independently and as a motivated team player
  • A willingness to work weekends and evenings
  • Travel required for off-site scheduled events
  • Must adhere to company’s policies and procedure

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to be active for prolonged periods
  • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
  • Able to regularly lift/carry 44 pound boxes
  • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to lift/move 165 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Able to drive, stand, walk, kneel, lift and bend required for virtually the entire shift
  • Able to balance – pulling product, climb in and out of truck
  • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
  • Able to read and follow written English instructions
  • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
  • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
  • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

ABOUT MODERN TIMES
Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we’re distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, with new California locations planned for Anaheim and Santa Barbara in the coming year. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
