The Events Manager / Assistant Tasting Room Manager reports to the General Manager and is primarily responsible for driving private Tasting Room events, as well as on and off-site public events. This Manager is also responsible for supporting in the day to day management of staff, facilities, revenue, and organization of the daily operations of the Modern Times location. From events to daily operations, the variety of tasks in this position demands a detail-oriented, driven, well-organized individual committed to providing an outstanding service experience to our fans. They will set the tone, work ethic, and enthusiasm for the rest of the staff in our tasting rooms. THE EVERYDAY VIEW

    • Develop and streamline a robust and profitable year-round events program, both private and public
    • Collaborate with the MT Events Manager in SD and Marketing department to create programming that is innovative, consistent yet geographically tailored across properties, profitable, and reflective of Modern Times aesthetics for public and private audiences
    • Take advantage of opportunities to monetize the tasting rooms from an events perspective, from company happy hours, to brewery tours, to other weekday opportunities, as well as major events around the San Diego Territory to bring foot traffic into the tasting rooms
    • Spread enthusiasm for the MT brand by creating exceptional and unique experiences for corporate and personal celebrations through interdepartmental collaboration
    • Facilitate, create, and execute all events and requests utilizing comprehensive shared events calendar and other communication tools (Slack)
    • Take leadership in all auxiliary functions to ensure event success from start to finish, including vendor coordination, working directly with other departments to develop beer lists, staffing, event aesthetic, all equipment facilitation (glassware, chairs, tables, etc.), adequate promotion and post-event financial reporting
    • Develop plans for post-event debriefing, assessment, and improvements
    • Assist in day to day Tasting Room operational tasks – including, but not limited to: cash handling, menus, website, and onsite coverage to General Manager
    • Provide General Manager/Director of Hospitality with FOH support as needed
    • Other tasks as needed

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
    • LEAD certification required
    • Applicable State or county Food Handler Certification required
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred
    • A minimum of 2 years event management experience required
    • Microsoft Office proficiency required
    • Strong background in beer-centric events highly desired
    • Preferred previous service industry and/or hospitality experience
    • Preferred knowledge of craft beer and the brewing process
    • Very strong organizational and communications skills
    • The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

    • Up to 15% travel time may be required

    • Evening, holiday, and weekend availability required
    • Able to be active for prolonged periods
    • Able to work in an office environment and perform work at a desk for extended periods of time
    • Able to regularly lift, push, or pull up to 60 pounds
    • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
    • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, and kneel
    • Able to lift heavy objects to shoulder height
    • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
    • Able to read and follow written English instructions
    • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
    • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
    • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
    • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

ABOUT MODERN TIMES
Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we’re distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara in 2019, with new California locations planned for Anaheim and Oakland in the coming year. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.
In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
