We run a 30bbl brewery in San Diego.

The Office Assistant reports to the Operations Manager and is responsible for coordinating travel, staff events, maintaining supplies and equipment, making sure the office remains organized, directing guests to the right place, and embodying Modern Times hospitality. This role is an important and visible face of the company for many of our fans; it is their duty to represent Modern Times and our beer in the best, most informative way possible while providing outstanding service experience for every person who walks in our door. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitment to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.


    • Support the Operations Team overall success
    • Occasional clerical tasks for Operations Team
    • Monitor office supply levels and reorder when necessary
    • Answer incoming calls and voicemails. Pass messages to proper channels when necessary
    • Distribute mail and check packages at the back door
    • Point of contact for office related vendors and guests
    • Maintain a quarterly budget and coordinate quarterly staff events
    • Point of contact between employees and travel vendor
    • Point of contact for arriving interviewees and notify hiring manager of their arrival
    • Perform cleaning and upkeep as needed in the office and break rooms
    • Make sure office kegerator is cleaned regularly and stocked with kombucha, bubbly water and cold brew
    • Provide fruit for staff and maintain budget
    • Water office plants as needed
    • Clean and organize the refrigerators once a week
    • Be a team player and able to interact with all levels within the organization
    • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
    • Other tasks as needed


    • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
    • Minimum 1 year of professional customer service experience required
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
    • Up to 10% travel time may be required
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the Modern Times products, history, and heritage required
    • Minimum 1 year of professional brewery operations experience preferred
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and a love for interacting with people
    • Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative
    • Must adhere to company’s policies and procedures
    • Desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company


    • Able to work in an office environment and perform work at desk for extended periods of time
    • Able to work and thrive in high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
    • Able to stand, walk, and be on your feet for prolonged periods
    • Able to read and follow written English instructions
    • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 55 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
    • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, includingcrowded spaces
    • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
    • Able to move 165-pounds, using appropriate techniques and tools
    • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
    • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
    • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we’re distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara in 2019, with new California locations planned for Anaheim and Oakland in the coming year. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.
In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
