Scorched Earth Brewing Company is a production brewery located in the Village of Algonquin, IL.

Our taproom serves as a special and unique locale where individuals can experience craft beer styles not regularly available at just any restaurant, bar, or brewery. Individuals should be pleasantly surprised when they arrive, feel comfortable and welcome during their stay, excited by the access they have to a full-scale production brewery, and hooked to learn more about our styles, brands, history, brewing process, and team – leaving the taproom a fan and ambassador. Scorched Earth Brewing Company is looking to hire a part-time Taproom Manager to support this vision by leading others to ensure the taproom team is appropriately staffed, trained, welcoming and helpful,; the environment is clean, safe, comfortable and fun; and the beer being served is at its best.  They are responsible and available for addressing unforeseen needs quickly and effectively.

Job Responsibilities

  • Consistently acts as a leader; sets a professional tone for staff communication and dynamics; is informed and up-to-date on the taproom and company offerings, products, and services;
  • Maintains current knowledge and understanding of all company procedures and policies; exemplifies, upholds and enforces all policies and procedures;
  • Helps create and maintain a pleasant taproom environment and experience (temperature, music, cleanliness, conduct) according to the guidelines set forth by ownership; Helps establish and maintain high customer service; Tirelessly making sure that taproom patrons’ needs are met quickly and efficiently; Acts as a brand ambassador for the brewery/taproom; works regular shifts in the tap room side-by-side with shift leaders and taproom heros;
  • Ensures beers on tap are acceptable to serve (right temperature, optimal quality, no off-smells or flavors); ensures all taproom staff are trained on the beer styles and characteristics, and associated brands; communicates with Head Brewer immediately when notifies/observes that draft system, cold room, and/or other beer related issues arise that need assistance;
  • Communicates beer release and other related information from management/production to taproom staff each week; works closely with graphics/marketing team to develop weekly communiques to public via MailChimp, social media outlets, website, etc; updates taproom menu (print/digital);
  • Establishes and manages the monthly taproom staff schedule, reviews it with employees and management, and posts it; manages staff scheduling adjustments as necessary; maintains system for tracking schedule requests; ensures that shifts and responsibilities for supervisors and other staff are covered during vacations and emergencies.
  • Manages the food truck schedule, including searching for new food trucks, catering (for special events) and creating and maintaining relationships with local food establishments that deliver to the taproom;
  • Manages the live music schedule, including searching for new performers and bands, evaluating booking request and coordinating with owners, scheduling/booking, coordinating on the calendar;
  • Managing and coordinating special event programming, including can/bottle releases, beer dinners/food pairings, brewery tours, other special events, and larger brewery festivals;
  • Managing private events in the taproom, including reviewing requests and obtaining information, communicating  with staff the event details including any special needs, scheduling staff for the events, and managing a calendar; training staff how to work a private event; and coordinating between all affected parties to ensure all goes smoothly
  • Operates and understands core functions of the point of sale system, ensures the system/software is current and hardware is well maintained/operational, assists in training users;
  • Manages taproom cash handling procedures, including reviewing weekly transactions, reconciliation, bank deposits, sales reporting, training, etc;
  • Manages taproom cleaning supplies and office supplies including regular inventories, restocking/ordering any necessary supplies;
  • Organizes and coordinates daily, weekly, monthly and year-end inventory; participates in all inventories, inventory follow-up, and resolution of inventory variances; notifies management of low inventories so items such as glassware can be ordered in a timely manner;
  • Oversees taproom recruiting efforts by coordinating and participating in candidate interviewing, hiring, new hire orientations and departmental trainings; ensures proper completion of all hiring, employment, termination forms/paperwork and maintenance of proper personnel files and recordkeeping; reviews and approves taproom timesheets;
  • Leads training & development of staff to promote knowledge, efficiency and growth; coordinates with team to schedule periodic trainings as needed; evaluates, adjusts and improves training systems;
  • Helps set job expectations and performance goals for taproom staff; evaluates employee performance and growth and provides regular feedback;
  • Takes initiative to identify ways to promote/market taproom to help maintain and increase sales; thoroughly researching ideas and providing proposals to management for consideration with strategies to implement and expected results based on research;
  • Takes initiative to identify ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of taproom operations;
  • Responds promptly to management inquiries, assignments and deadlines;
  • Coordinates and participates in promotion of the taproom in the local community through business networking organizations and events;
  • Schedules, monitors and supervises preventive maintenance of taproom equipment; Maintains up-to-date equipment files and maintenance records;
  • Other tasks as appropriate

Here Is What We Are Looking For

  • Must be 21 + years of age;
  • Friendly and professional (aka strong customer service);
  • Requires a high school diploma, preferably a bachelor’s degree, and management experience preferably in the hospitality industry;
  • Strong organization and communication skills to discern and address the needs of customers, employees, stakeholders, and company leadership;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities within a dynamic environment;
  • Demonstrated leadership capacity motivating and unifying teams;
  • Goal-oriented with ability to demonstrate integrity and honesty;
  • Demonstrated impeccable technical skills, savvy, and comfort using all types of software, including document and spreadsheet software;
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate strong relationships within the organization and community-at-large;
  • A constant learner, able to flourish in a fast-paced, high-growth, entrepreneurial environment;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to manage and operate the taproom effectively, including evenings and weekends
  • Able to work effectively with people at all levels across the organization;
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals;
  • Passion for craft beer; Strong understanding/knowledge of beer styles and the craft beer industry preferred; Certified Beer Server Level 1 Cicerone a plus;
  • Highly organized and experienced in scheduling;
  • Experienced in coordinating special events;
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience managing a taproom, restaurant, or bar preferred;
  • Experience with various POS and inventory management systems and cash handling procedures;
  • Collaborative spirit with a hands-on attitude and a strong work ethic ;
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback;
  • Responsible and dependable; Management experience preferred;
  • Bassett certification is a plus and will be required prior to employment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Must be able to move full kegs with the aid of a dolly;
  • Aptitude for and desire to learn the mechanical workings of taproom equipment in order to address problems quickly and efficiently;
  • Must be able to stand, walk, lift, and bend for long periods of time;
  • Environment may involve noise and temperature changes.
